Hedgehog Trap                                                    Photo by Hayli

Now that Hayli's Dad has joined us from Fiji, Hayli has put into action her long-held plan to catch a hedgehog with the intention of having a pet, albeit a prickly one. Her Dad had been shown by his mother's father a good thirty years ago how to make a trap, and remarkably, he remembered the basics and here, after some false starts is the finished item, which has now been set in the leaf litter under the Lombardy poplar in the corner of the section.

Some experimentation is necessary to find the right bait. We await developments.

  1. Apparently they like cat or dog food, wet or dry, but not something you'd have in the pantry I'm guessing. Bacon perhaps?

  2. Hi Hayli, Hedgehogs like to eat worms and centipedes so catch a couple and tie all their legs to the trip-wire ( a bit tricky with the worms legs) and BINGO, by tomorrow you'll have a new pet you can take to bed but don't hug to tightly. Good hunting.

  3. Thanks for that advice, Stevie. I'm sure that we have enough rope to truss a centipede's limbs to the trigger bar. We could also employ grandma to apply the rubber band to the fangs.

  4. Hayli - how's the hedgehog hunting going? Perhaps Dad could put his builder's apron on and build you one of these:

  5. No luck yet.

You should look up hedgehogs on DOC's website before you advocate making nice little houses for them. :)
